Life with Ubuntu (Linux)

Well, I guess it’s been about a week or two since I switched over to Linux. I can say that each day I use it the more I like it. I won’t lie to you either. There have been a few things that were difficult to figure out. But after some common sense and reading online I managed to work the kinks out.
So, what do I like so far? Well, one thing I really enjoy is the power consumption!! When I would run Windows I could expect to get about an hour to hour and a half battery life. On Linux I have been able to run for about 2 hours before it would even warn me about power. It’s amazing how reducing the amount of code a processor has to work on can cut battery drain so much. Another thing is the HEAT! Most of us can relate to the hot lap feeling while using a laptop. One thing I noticed right away is that the laptop does not get so hot any more. I dont even feel the fans working that hard! I am very impressed!
Okay okay, enough about the physical stuff. I am happy to say that a couple games are working well. I installed Call of Duty, and Pocket Tanks and both run very well. I am still tweaking Oblivion to work just right. I think I have to install Oldblivion to get it working smoothly. I also have a problem with Neon Wars, it just crashes. But I think that’s a configuration issue more than it is a non-compatibility one (both Neon Wars and Pocket Tanks are written by the same person). My last *issue* I guess would be the fact that every time I plug my iPod into Linux it scrambles the internal database and makes it not see the music. Not sure why that does that but I am still working on that too.
I would like to point out that while there are issues with things, I am a COMPLETE LINUX Newbie! I dont know all the tricks to make things work right away, but I’m getting there!!
But with all things aside, I am loving Linux. I have seen my friend (www.rustyjr.com) go through too much garbage dealing with Vista and it’s massive list of incompatible software. He has had two laptops with Vista on them and they both act stupid when you try to install just about anything. If he’s not doing Yahoo! instant messenger stuff or just browsing the web, then he’s getting pissed off at the latest program he installed. Dont even get me started on the WiFi… LOL!!
Anyways, just wanted to post this out there to let you Windows users know that it’s okay to switch operating systems. Ubuntu has finally made it easy for us Newbies to migrate to Linux without all the headache!
