I’m all about Open Source projects!
So, my entire life I’ve been infected by Windows. Every computer I’ve ever owned has had it. The early days of computing I had Windows 3.1!! The major reason I never switched to Linux (or it’s cousins) was ease of use. I wasn’t smart enough to write my own device drivers, or re-program a kernel. As you may already know, I recently switched to Linux (Ubuntu Gutsty Gibbon) and fell in love immediately. I found that not only do my games run well, but that it runs so much more smoothly than Windows ever did.
Anyway, I have always been about free things. Free software, free music, free speech, free internet, free lunch (just kidding). In windows it is very hard to find free things, let alone open source projects! I hated using a program that would error out and I couldn’t fix it. I programmed in Visual Basic for a number of years and I understand most of what causes windows errors to happen. So not being able to fix the issue was so frustrating!!
The Open Source Projects all over Linux are totally awesome. I dont know the first thing about C/C++ but I LOVE the ability to go on the web and ask people who do know that stuff and get professional and friendly help to resolve any issues I’ve come across. I want to put Linux on my PSP, iPod, and even my phone. Well that is becoming more and more awesome.
I’ve been reading in the news about these new (at least to me) groups, specifically the Open Handset Alliance. I think that as time goes on more and more people will become computer savvy and the Open Source mindset will become more prevalent. I feel that companies who step out and give the Mega Corporations a run for their money are doing a great job.
Like my buddy Rusty, I am underway with the Navy and I have fallen a bit behind the new technology. He recently posted a new clip about Android, a new mobile phone platform which is based on the Linux operating system. This is great news for us who enjoy the “Open” mindset. Head over to that link and read the clip about Android and you’ll see how awesome our future is becoming.
